Genealogy Grants Retrospective: StoryCorps

Genealogy Grants Retrospective: StoryCorps

Continuing the celebration of the upcoming 15th anniversary of the Seton Shields Genealogical Grants program is a peek back at StoryCorps, which received a grant in 2004.

StoryCorps is a 21st century WPA whose objective is to “to instruct and inspire people to record each others’ stories in sound.” Back in 2004, they had constructed a StoryBooth in NYC where anyone could record a broadcast-quality interview for $10 (subsidized by the organization’s donors). You got a copy of the CD and a copy was submitted to the StoryCorps Archive, housed at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. These days, there are multiple ways to record your story, including StoryBooths in Atlanta, Chicago, and San Francisco, Door-to-Door sessions, and DIY using the StoryCorps app.
