Greetings Fellow Family History Sleuths,

It's been a busy month in GenealogyLand! This issue covers the new Pope's roots, the soon-to-be new owner of 23andMe, several soldier homecomings (both WWII & Korean War), a cool Irish research tool, and a piece on what grandparents really think of their grandkids' first names. And then there's the fun chat I had with Damian Shiels and Fin Dwyer about all things Annie Moore (of Ellis Island)! Here's hoping there's a little something for everyone.

Until next time, stay cool!

Annie Moore: The First Immigrant through Ellis Island

Governor Tim Walz

In this episode, Fin and Damian interview Megan Smolenyak, a genealogist who has written a book titled The Quest for Annie Moore of Ellis Island: Uncovering the True Story of the First Immigrant to Arrive at America's Isle of Hope. The podcast explores Annie's life in Ireland, how she rose to fame as the first emigrant to pass through Ellis Island, and how she later faded into obscurity and was misidentified until Megan began to research her story.

The Quest for Annie Moore of Ellis Island: Uncovering the True Story of the First Immigrant to Arrive at America’s Isle of Hope

On January 1, 1892, Annie Moore of Ireland tripped into the pages of history and became the poster child of immigration by being the first to arrive at Ellis Island. And then she disappeared. Adding insult to injury, a different Annie Moore usurped her place in history decades later. Now – 150 years after her birth and 100 years after her death – a determined genealogist finally sets the record straight and reveals the true story of Ellis Island’s first.
